Police intercept a 14-year-old boy attempting a stowaway entry at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, as authorities reinforce aviation security.

The Airport Police Command at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Monday intercepted a 14-year-old boy over a suspected stowaway attempt within the airport premises.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Airport Police Command, ASP Mohammed Adeola, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the minor was discovered on the airport tarmac while attempting to gain unlawful access beneath an aircraft.

Adeola described the incident as a serious breach of aviation security protocols in a highly sensitive operational environment.

According to him, preliminary findings indicated that the teenager entered a restricted area without authorization, an action that contravenes Sections 2 and 3 of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) regulations and is consistent with a stowaway attempt.

“Upon interception, the minor was taken into protective custody in line with due process and established child protection procedures,” he said.

He added that the boy’s parents were immediately notified and all necessary protocols observed, including conducting interviews in their presence. The Command also ensured the minor received appropriate care, support and welfare considerations throughout the process.

The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Olufunke Ogunbode, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding aviation infrastructure, describing the airport as a critical national asset requiring strict adherence to security regulations.

She urged parents to closely monitor their children, especially around restricted and high-risk environments such as airports.

Ogunbode stated that the case would follow juvenile justice procedures, with the minor to be charged before the appropriate juvenile court.

She reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining safety, security and order while upholding the rights and welfare of all individuals, particularly minors.
