The youngest son of former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe appeared in a South African court on Monday on charges of attempted murder following a shooting incident in Johannesburg.

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe is accused of involvement in the shooting of a gardener who was wounded last week at a mansion in Johannesburg where he had been staying.

He was not asked to enter a plea during the court session. The matter was postponed until March 3 to allow for further investigations. A second suspect is also facing charges in connection with the incident.

The court heard that Chatunga, believed to be in his late 20s, will remain in custody pending his next appearance.

Both accused persons are additionally charged with defeating the ends of justice, as authorities have yet to recover the firearm allegedly used in the shooting.

Chatunga’s lawyer, Sinenhlanhla Mnguni, declined to comment on his client’s stance regarding the charges, saying he would respond to Reuters at a later time.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the gardener remains hospitalised following the shooting, which occurred on Thursday.

Robert Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years after the country gained independence from Britain in 1980. He was removed from office in a military intervention in 2017 and died in 2019 at a hospital in Singapore at the age of 95.
