President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Kashim Shettima to lead a high-powered Federal Government delegation to Kano following the devastating fire at Singer Market.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the delegation is scheduled to depart Abuja on Monday to convey the President’s sympathies to traders who lost billions of naira in the disaster.
The fire, which reportedly began on Saturday evening and continued into Sunday morning, caused extensive damage to the Singer Market.
Tinubu expressed sadness that the incident marked the second fire outbreak at the same market in less than two weeks.
The delegation is also expected to pledge financial assistance to support affected traders and assist Kano State in facilitating the swift reopening of the market.
Members of the delegation include Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; Deputy Senate President, Sen. Barau Jibrin; Sen. Kawu Ismaila; and Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation.
Also on the delegation are the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Bernard Doro, and the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar.
The President had earlier spoken by telephone with Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to obtain a situation report on the incident.
Tinubu further directed a comprehensive investigation into the causes of recurrent market fires across the country.
