Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government.

The summit, held over the weekend, was themed “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”

Deliberations centred on strengthening continental commitments to sustainable water management, improved sanitation systems and advancing the broader development aspirations outlined in the AU’s Agenda 2063 framework.

Beyond plenary sessions involving Heads of State and Government, Shettima participated in high-level side events and bilateral engagements with political and business leaders to deepen Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic and strategic partnerships across Africa.

During the summit, the vice president secured the goodwill of António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, who urged Nigeria to play a leading role in Africa’s push for a reformed global governance structure.

Shettima also advocated for health security sovereignty across the continent, calling for a transition from dependence on foreign aid to the development of resilient, self-sufficient and homegrown health systems.

His participation at the 39th AU Summit forms part of Nigeria’s ongoing diplomatic engagement within Africa aimed at strengthening continental cooperation and advancing shared development priorities.
