SOUTH AFRICA Feb. 9, 2026–Another Nigerian killed in South Africa as NUSA confirms the fatal shooting of Emeka Uzor in Johannesburg and urges South African authorities to investigate and prosecute those responsible.
Another Nigerian killed in South Africa has once again plunged the Nigerian community in the country into grief following the fatal shooting of Emeka Uzor in Johannesburg on Sunday.
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), the umbrella body representing Nigerians living in South Africa, confirmed the killing in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.
The statement was jointly signed by NUSA President, Mr. Smart Nwobi, and National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Akindele Olunloyo.
According to the union, Uzor was shot dead at about 3:00 p.m. at a Carltex Garage in Windsor East, Randburg, while seated in his vehicle.
“Preliminary information available to us indicates that the killing bears the hallmarks of a targeted assassination,” NUSA stated.
The deceased, the union disclosed, hailed from Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria.
NUSA described the incident as part of a disturbing and recurring pattern of violent attacks against Nigerian nationals in South Africa, calling for urgent and decisive action by the authorities.
“The Nigerian Union South Africa calls on the South African government, particularly the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, to conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into this killing,” the statement read.
The union further demanded that any individual found culpable be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, stressing that justice must not only be done but be seen to be done.
NUSA also urged South African authorities to address what it described as persistent and targeted violence against Nigerians residing in the country.
In addition, the union called on the Nigerian government to intensify diplomatic engagement on the matter.
“NUSA equally calls on the Nigerian government, through the offices of our Consul General and the High Commissioner, to actively engage with their South African counterparts to ensure the protection of Nigerian citizens,” the statement added.
The union appealed to the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to work closely with NUSA as a community-based organization in addressing such incidents through diplomatic and legal channels.
While expressing confidence in South Africa’s justice system, NUSA said it hoped that the perpetrators would be identified and brought to justice, allowing the victim’s family to find closure.
NUSA also urged members of the Nigerian community in South Africa to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding despite the pain and provocation surrounding the killing.
“The union is working tirelessly with relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served,” it assured.
