The 2025 PDP Convention kicked off at Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan on Saturday, with host Governor Seyi Makinde expressing confidence that the convention’s outcome would positively shape the party’s national fortunes.

In his welcome address, Makinde emphasized the sacrifices made to organize the convention and urged all delegates to maintain unity and peaceful conduct throughout the proceedings. He also commended the efforts of the Convention Organising Committee, chaired by Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa, who received the convention flag.

Declaring the convention officially open, PDP acting National Chairman Iliya Damagum, who received the party flag, called on delegates to sustain their loyalty and support for the party. He praised Governor Makinde for his support and expressed optimism that the convention would further strengthen the party’s cohesion.

Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, in a goodwill message, commended delegates for their resilience and faith in the party, assuring them that the PDP would continue to progress. Wabara also urged the party executives to maintain an inclusive approach that encourages collaboration among members.

Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, highlighted the party’s mission for Nigeria’s future and encouraged democracy advocates to persist in their efforts to keep democracy thriving.

During the opening ceremony, several party leaders received flags representing their offices. Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, also Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, received the Nigerian flag. Governor Makinde received the Oyo State flag, Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro received the Senate flag, and Mr. Fred Agbedi received the House of Representatives flag. The convention began with the accreditation of over 3,000 delegates.

The convention comes in the wake of significant PDP Expulsion decisions, which saw Minister Nyesom Wike, Ayodele Fayose, Samuel Anyanwu, and others removed from the party for anti-party activities during the Ibadan gathering. This disciplinary action underscores the party’s commitment to enforcing internal rules and maintaining cohesion as it seeks to strengthen its national outlook.
