Tinubu Nominates Udeh, Enugu’s Attorney-General for Ministerial Position

ABUJA, November 4, 2025 – President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate requesting the screening and confirmation of Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Enugu State, as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The President’s letter (Tinubu Nominates Udeh) was formally read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary. Following the announcement, Senator Akpabio referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further consideration and subsequent screening in line with the upper chamber’s procedures.

The development comes barely a month after the resignation of Uche Nnaji, the former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, who was the only member of the Federal Executive Council from Enugu State. Nnaji’s resignation followed controversies surrounding his academic qualifications and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate. His exit created a vacuum in the Tinubu cabinet and left Enugu State without a ministerial representative.

If confirmed by the Senate, Dr. Udeh will become Enugu State’s new voice at the federal executive level – an appointment that observers say blends youth, competence, and a strong record of legal and administrative experience.

Dr. Udeh, who hails from Enugu State, has built a distinguished reputation within Nigeria’s legal community. As Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, he is credited with spearheading far-reaching reforms that strengthened justice delivery, improved prosecutorial standards, and enhanced the autonomy of the Enugu judiciary. His elevation to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) earlier this year was widely regarded as a recognition of his professional excellence and ethical commitment to public service.

The nomination also aligns with President Tinubu’s pledge to strengthen the rule of law and deepen administrative reforms through the inclusion of dynamic professionals in governance. Analysts believe Udeh’s legal expertise could contribute significantly to the administration’s ongoing efforts in judicial modernization, innovation policy, and institutional accountability.

This latest development resonates with one of GMTNewng’s previous publications that profiled Dr. Udeh’s steady rise through both legal and public service pathways. Our earlier report, “Justice Chief, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, Elevated to Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Puts Enugu on Legal Map“, examined career progression and how his policy initiatives and reforms introduced new levels of efficiency in justice administration across Enugu State. Beyond his public office, Dr. Udeh’s contributions to legal education, mentorship, and professional development have been lauded within the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and among legal scholars nationwide. His balanced approach to governance – combining reform with institutional respect – has earned him commendations for fostering collaboration between the executive and the judiciary in Enugu.

Reacting to nomination ‘Tinubu Nominates Udeh’, Professor Chinedu Nebo, former Minister of Power and one-time Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, described Udeh as “a brilliant, disciplined and purpose-driven professional whose appointment, if confirmed, will further enhance the credibility of public service at the national level.”

Similarly, Barrister Adaora Chukwu, a policy analyst and member of the Enugu Bar, commended the President’s choice, noting that “Dr. Udeh represents a refreshing balance of youth, intellect, and administrative experience. His nomination validates the argument that performance and character still matter in Nigeria’s leadership selection process.”

On his part, Chief Ben Etiaba, FCA, Managing Partner at Etiaba & Co and a political commentator, hailed the nomination as “an excellent reflection of Enugu’s growing influence in national affairs. Udeh’s work in the justice sector stands as evidence that competence and dedication are still being recognized at the highest levels.” Tinubu Nominates Udeh.

With the Senate now expected to commence screening in the coming days, public attention has turned to how the nomination might impact Enugu’s broader representation in national politics. Some stakeholders view it as an opportunity to consolidate the state’s contribution to federal governance under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while others see it as a reward for merit and administrative performance.

In Enugu State, reactions have been largely positive. Government officials and civic groups have described the nomination as a reflection of the President’s sensitivity to competence and balance in his cabinet. Legal professionals have equally expressed optimism that Udeh’s inclusion would bolster ongoing national justice sector reforms.

For the people of Enugu and the South East, the anticipated confirmation of Dr. Udeh could mark a return to active representation in federal decision-making – particularly in sectors tied to innovation, law reform, and good governance.

As highlighted in our past analyses on GMT News, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh’s journey underscores the potential of merit-based appointments in reshaping Nigeria’s political narrative. His prospective transition from state-level administration to the federal cabinet stands as an indicator of how professional excellence continues to attract national recognition.

If the Senate gives its nod, Dr. Udeh will join a new generation of public officials whose expertise and reform credentials reflect the President’s broader vision of governance built on competence, innovation, and integrity. For Tinubu Nominates Udeh and more, visit GMTNewsng.
