October 6, 2025 | Abuja – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, warning residents to brace for possible flash floods in several northern and central states.
According to NiMet’s three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected over parts of Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina on Monday morning, with Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba likely to experience rainfall later in the day.
“Flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during this period,” the agency stated.
For the central states, including Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa, NiMet predicted morning cloudiness with light to moderate rainfall, warning that some areas in Plateau face a high flood risk.
In the southern region, light to moderate rains are expected across Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

The forecast also indicated that Tuesday would bring sunny skies with patchy clouds in the north, while Adamawa, Taraba, and neighboring states may continue to see thunderstorms. Moderate rainfall is projected to persist in the central and southern parts of the country.
By Wednesday, NiMet expects sunshine with thunderstorms over the northern states in the morning and cloudy skies with moderate rains over the central region. Southern states such as Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River will likely experience morning showers and moderate to heavy rainfall later in the day.
NiMet cautioned residents in flood-prone areas to activate emergency response plans, avoid driving through flooded roads, secure loose items, and stay safe from strong winds and cold nighttime temperatures.
The agency further advised the public to disconnect electrical appliances during storms, avoid seeking shelter under tall trees, and ensure airline operators obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight safety.
