The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across several states of the federation between Friday and Sunday, cautioning residents and stakeholders to take safety precautions.
According to NiMet’s weather outlook released on Thursday in Abuja, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in parts of Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Taraba States on Friday morning. Later in the day, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall will spread across Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, and other northern states.
For the North Central region, NiMet forecast a cloudy atmosphere with sunshine intervals during the morning hours, with chances of light rain over Niger, Kogi, and Benue States. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are anticipated in Nasarawa, Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The agency also projected intermittent rainfall in most parts of the South throughout the forecast period, warning of possible flooding in Lagos, Ogun, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States. On Saturday, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected in the North, with thunderstorms and rainfall predicted for Taraba, Adamawa, Borno (South), Bauchi, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kano, and Katsina later in the day.
NiMet further forecast thunderstorms with moderate rain across Abuja, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue in the afternoon and evening, while southern states including Lagos, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom will experience light to moderate rainfall during morning and evening hours.
On Sunday, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are anticipated over the North, with light rain in Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across most northern states later in the day. The central region, including Abuja, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue, will also experience thunderstorms and rainfall, while southern states such as Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom are expected to record moderate rains.
NiMet advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy downpours, while farmers were urged to delay applying fertilizers and pesticides to prevent nutrient loss. Residents were also warned to secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and stay away from tall trees.
