98 Feared Dead in Niger Petrol Tanker Explosion
A tragic petrol tanker explosion in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State has claimed the lives of at least 98 people and left 69 others severely injured. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, also destroyed over 20 shops, according to officials.
Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), described the explosion as “one of the most devastating incidents the state has witnessed in recent times.” He confirmed that the tragedy began when a petrol tanker crashed, prompting another tanker to be brought in to transfer the contents.
Reports suggest that residents gathered to scoop fuel from the crashed tanker before the explosion occurred. Baba-Arah lamented, “We have repeatedly warned about the dangers of scooping fuel, but this unfortunate act has now claimed so many lives.”
In the aftermath of the explosion, at least 80 victims were buried in a mass grave at Dikko Primary Healthcare Centre by officials from NSEMA and the Gurara Local Government. Other victims’ bodies were handed over to their families for private burials.
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and called for urgent action to prevent similar occurrences. “I have instructed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to immediately commence a nationwide campaign to educate citizens on the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers,” he said.
This incident highlights a disturbing trend of petrol tanker explosions in Nigeria. Earlier this month, a similar explosion in Agbor, Ika Local Government Area of Delta State, claimed two lives. Despite previous awareness efforts, these tragic events continue to occur.
Experts have called for stricter regulations and enforcement regarding the transportation of petroleum products. “This recurring issue can be prevented with proper safety measures and public education,” Baba-Arah emphasized, urging the government and stakeholders to prioritize safety. GMTNewsng
