Ezinne Mama Theresa Udegbunam Onyekwelu, affectionately known as “Pleasure Nwanyi,” was born in 1929 to the family of Nze Aniedo Egesi wa Ojei of Okpuyo Ozom Aguobuowa in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State. Though born during a time when formal education for girls was rare, she overcame such barriers with her resilience and passion for learning. Her marriage to an educated man inspired her to attend adult school, where she became literate, enabling her to support her family in business and bring modern values into her life. “She was the great pillar behind her husband’s accomplishments and the successes of her children,” recalls Flt. Lft. Stanley Ikechukwu Onyekwelu (rtd.), one of her beloved sons.

Known for her steadfast commitment to integrity and virtue, Mama Theresa exemplified a life marked by unwavering principles. Her family members fondly describe her as a woman of “uncompromising values.” “Just like her husband, she upheld values of chastity and integrity that shaped her family and community,” shared her daughter-in-law Prof. Uche Lucy Onyekwelu. These qualities left a lasting legacy that touched many in Aguobuowa, where her name remains a cherished household reference.

A devout Catholic, Mama Theresa was a member of the League of St. Anthony of Padua. Her spirituality was marked by a giving spirit and boundless compassion for others, much like Dorcas in Acts 9:36. “Her life was a living testament to Proverbs 31:10—a virtuous woman, far more valuable than rubies,” Prof. Onyekwelu reflected, underscoring her mother-in-law’s enduring Christian faith and selfless life.

Her warmth and hospitality became hallmarks of her personality, endearing her to all who crossed her path. “Anyone who knew or related with her would feel blessed to have known someone who truly represented the elderly wisdom and grace of our heritage,” her son-in-law added. Mama Theresa’s enduring presence was a blend of strength and tenderness, offering family members and friends a place of solace and love.

Even in her later years, she actively participated in family gatherings, especially the tradition of ‘omugo,’ celebrating the births of her grandchildren with joy and affection. “She attended every ‘omugo’ and had special names for each of her grandchildren,” shared Prof. Onyekwelu. Despite the distance, she made time to visit, arriving with all the traditional materials needed to fulfill her maternal duties—a reflection of her commitment to family values.

Her stories about her early years in the larger Onyekwelu family were not only entertaining but educational. She emphasized patience, harmony, and a sense of history, all of which deeply influenced her children and grandchildren. “Her grip on history was impeccable, and her advice on life matters was invaluable,” shared her family, who fondly remember her wisdom-laden stories that were often laced with humor.

Mama Theresa’s Christian faith extended beyond her immediate family. She “adopted” children from all walks of life, both young and old, whom she nurtured, sponsored, and guided in their spiritual journey. “Mama’s home was open to all who sought comfort, counsel, and encouragement,” said her daughter-in-law. Her influence went beyond her biological family, leaving a mark on countless lives.

Her memory as a gracious hostess and doting mother lives on in the hearts of her family. “She always celebrated every milestone we achieved, from educational pursuits to other accomplishments. Her joy was evident each time she embraced us,” recalls Prof. Onyekwelu. This encouragement from Mama Theresa inspired her family to pursue their dreams with confidence and pride.

The many godchildren she baptized also frequently visited, drawn by her maternal warmth. “Her ‘Baptismal Children’ were like her own,” recalls her son, adding that their visits were filled with love and laughter, showing the depth of the bonds she formed with them. These relationships were a testament to her limitless capacity for love, welcoming people into her life with open arms and an open heart.

In honor of her remarkable life, her family and friends are gathering to celebrate her legacy. “We wish to honor this Amazon, this matriarch of our time, who lived for humanity and built a culture of love and accommodation,” Prof. Onyekwelu said, inviting everyone to join the family on November 9, 2024, as they bid farewell to their matriarch.

Prof. Onyekwelu, who had the privilege of knowing Mama Theresa as both a mother-in-law and mentor, shared the profound impact she had on her life. “Though I am her third daughter-in-law, I feel a deep bond with her,” she remarked, noting that Mama Theresa filled a large void in her life, offering wisdom and love that she will cherish forever. “She was the quintessential beauty queen of her time – a person of elegance, compassion, and strength.”

As they prepare to lay her to rest, her family finds comfort in the enduring legacy she leaves behind. “Mama Pleasure Nwanyi, our love and appreciation for all you represented will remain eternal,” expressed Prof. Onyekwelu. “Your advice to stand for peace and love will forever guide us. Adieu, our beloved matriarch – until we meet again in the resurrection morning.”
