Nkanu West Local Government Area came alive with celebrations on Monday, September 30, 2024, as John Chukwuma Ogbodo was sworn in as the Executive Chairman of the Council. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Government House, Enugu, officiated by the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, alongside the 16 other newly elected chairmen of Enugu State’s local government councils, following Ogbodo’s victory in the local government elections held on Saturday, September 21, 2024. A reception was later held at the Nkanu West Local Government Secretariat, Agbani, drawing dignitaries, political figures, and stakeholders for this historic moment for the people of Nkanu West.
Created in 1996 from the old Nkanu Local Government, Nkanu West has its administrative center in Agbani. The local government area, known for its cultural and political significance in Enugu State, has a rich history of leadership, with John Ogbodo’s inauguration marking a new chapter in its governance. In his speech, Ogbodo emphasized his commitment to leading with inclusivity, unity, and peace. “I stand here as a chairman for all, a chairman of hope, ready to work with every corner of Nkanu West for the progress we deserve,” he declared.
John Ogbodo is no stranger to public service, having built an impressive political career over the years. A successful businessman, he once served as Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sullivan Chime on Political Matters. As HRH Igwe Amushi Nwodo, a traditional ruler from Akpugo, observed, “John Ogbodo is a square peg in a square hole, having served in every key position relevant to this council.”

Ogbodo’s emergence as Chairman is the result of a carefully negotiated and inclusive process among key stakeholders in Nkanu West. His leadership style, which has been described as collaborative, was praised by many who see him as a unifier and a peacebuilder. “This is the beginning of a new era for our local government,” said Nnabuike Nwatu, a community elder, adding that Ogbodo’s focus on unity and inclusivity would heal past divisions and foster stronger cooperation among the people of Nkanu West.
The history of Nkanu West stretches back to 1951 when Nkanu Division was carved out of the larger Udi Division in the old Eastern Region. John Igwesi, who was later to become the traditional ruler of Obuoffia Awkunanaw, served as the first administrator of Nkanu Division in 1952. During the local government reforms of 1976 under General Murtala Mohammed, the old Nkanu Local Government Area was established, and in 1996, it was split into Nkanu East and Nkanu West LGAs under General Sani Abacha’s regime. Dr. Chika Okenwa-Ani, the last chairman of the old Nkanu LGC, reflected on the leadership of Ogbodo, who in the past held the position of Secretary of Nkanu West Local Government Council, stating, “John has the experience, the vision, and the drive to take Nkanu West to new heights.”
In his inauguration address, Governor Peter Mbah charged the new chairmen to hit the ground running, urging them to live up to the theme of his government, “Tomorrow is Here.” He explained that the theme calls for immediate action, insisting that there must be no room for procrastination or excuses. “Whatever needs to be done should not wait until tomorrow; it should be tackled immediately. I do not want to hear excuses, but rather, I expect you all to deliver,” Governor Mbah charged. He further urged the chairmen to ensure that their administrations work hard to bring much-needed development to their LGAs. Additionally, he cautioned them to stay close to their people, emphasizing that proximity to the people would enable them to understand the real issues at the grassroots and deliver impactful governance.
Ogbodo, who served as Deputy Chairman under Sir Nwabueze Nnamani, is expected to focus on promoting peace, unity, and development across the local government, aligning his agenda with the governor’s vision. His tenure promises to bring lasting change, addressing key challenges in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic growth. “I will work tirelessly to ensure that no part of Nkanu West is left behind. This administration will be one of hope and inclusivity,” Ogbodo assured.
Speaking on the relationship between Ogbodo and Nkanu West, Sir Nwabueze Nnamani, the former chairman of the council under whom Ogbodo served as Deputy Chairman, expressed confidence in Ogbodo’s ability to lead effectively. “John Ogbodo has always been dedicated to the service of the people. His track record speaks volumes. I know he will ensure that the council sees meaningful development in every corner,” Nnamani said.

He further described Ogbodo as a leader who knows how to navigate the complexities of governance. “John has the leadership skills and temperament required to unite people and drive the development agenda. Although the task is enormous but is not only capable but also willing to work having served as deputy chairman and secretary of the council respectively. He is equipped deliver,” Nnamani added, reinforcing the widespread confidence in Ogbodo’s administration.
Over the years, Nkanu West has seen a range of administrators and leaders, but Ogbodo’s tenure stands out because of his deep-rooted connections within the local communities. His leadership style is inclusive, ensuring that every community, regardless of size or political affiliation, has a voice in his administration. A youth leader in the area, Ekene Okereke, commented, “We trust in John’s ability to unite us all. He is not just a leader for a few, but a Chairman for all.”
Ogbodo’s priorities also align with the governor’s directive for local governments to avoid delays and ensure prompt and effective governance. He has already promised to embark on projects that will bring immediate benefits to the people of Nkanu West. This includes infrastructure upgrades, improvements in public health services, and initiatives aimed at empowering the youth and women within the local economy.
In addition to infrastructure and development, Ogbodo has pledged to focus on peacebuilding within the local government area. His leadership, he said, will serve as a unifying force to bridge any gaps between different communities and political factions. “Peace is the bedrock of development. Without peace, we cannot achieve the growth we seek,” he remarked, further stressing the importance of maintaining harmony in Nkanu West.
Dr. Chika Okenwa-Ani, the last chairman of the old Nkanu LGA, who attended the ceremony, expressed confidence in Ogbodo’s ability to steer the local government to greater heights. “John’s leadership represents a new dawn for Nkanu West. His commitment to inclusivity, unity, and peace will surely bring progress to our communities,” Okenwa-Ani stated. As the event drew to a close, it was clear that the people of Nkanu West were not only hopeful but excited about the future under John Ogbodo, whose deep involvement in local governance has made him uniquely qualified for the role. With a focus on inclusivity, unity, and development, Ogbodo’s tenure is expected to deliver on his promises and transform Nkanu West into a model local government area in Enugu State. “I am ready to serve every single one of you, regardless of where you come from or who you supported in the past,” Ogbodo said in closing, reaffirming his role as a Chairman for all.
