President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly suspended AbdulRasheed Bawa, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), indefinitely from his position. The reason for Bawa’s suspension has not yet been fully disclosed, but reports suggest that it may be related to ongoing investigations within the EFCC. The move has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with some praising Tinubu’s decisive action while others are calling for more clarity on the situation and a speedy resolution.

Following “weighty allegations” of abuse of office against him, the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), AbdulRasheed Bawa, is set to face a thorough investigation into his conduct while in office. This was confirmed by a statement from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, which says the suspension of Bawa position is indefinite. The statement reiterated the need to ensure that the EFCC operates with utmost accountability and professionalism, highlighting the importance of transparency in the investigation process. The results of the investigation will shed light on the veracity of the allegations and determine the appropriate next steps for the affected parties.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the following information was provided.

Pending the conclusion of the independent investigation into his conduct, AbdulRasheed Bawa has been instructed to relinquish his position as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and hand over to the Director, Operations in the Commission. This directive was issued following Bawa’s suspension by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in light of allegations of abuse of office. The arrangement is meant to ensure that there is continuity in the Commission’s operations while the investigation is underway, and marks an important step in the process of upholding the EFCC’s institutional integrity.

The statement read, “President Tinubu has approved the indefinite suspension from office of AbdulRasheed Bawa, CON, as the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office.
