The Uhueze-Nenwe Autonomous Community in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State has conducted the coronation of a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Chief Godwin-Chijioke Nwobodo, as its new traditional ruler.
Nwobodo, who previously served as DIG Zone 7, Abuja, covering Kaduna, the Federal Capital Territory and Niger State – and is a Fellow of the National Defence College, succeeded the late Igwe Emmanuel Nwachukwu, who passed away nine years ago.
The coronation ceremony, held on Saturday at the Girls High School Nenwe field, attracted large crowds of community members, friends, and well-wishers.
Crowning the monarch, Chairman of the Coronation Planning and Execution Committee, Group Captain Joseph Orji (Rtd.), described the occasion as “historic and glorious.”
“Today, we witness history, a day that binds the proud heritage of our forefathers with the hopes and aspirations of a new generation,” Orji said.
He noted that the coronation symbolised unity, renewal, and the community’s collective commitment to peace and development.
Orji described Igwe Nwobodo as a leader shaped by discipline, experience, and compassion, adding that his public service record reflects integrity, excellence, and dedication to humanity.
“His ascension to the throne is well-deserved and divinely ordained – a blessing to Uhueze-Nenwe and Aninri at large,” he said, while urging community members to support the new monarch.
A member of the Igwe’s Council of Chiefs, Chief Sunday Esom, said the entire community unanimously selected Nwobodo, reaffirming their resolve to stand by him throughout his reign.
In his acceptance speech, Igwe Nwobodo said the coronation carried a responsibility to serve with humility, justice, and the fear of God.
He pledged to promote peace, uphold cultural heritage, and ensure fairness in leadership, regardless of political or personal differences.
“This throne shall be a place of listening, dialogue, justice, and reconciliation,” he said, assuring that his reign would be free from discrimination.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s current economic and security challenges, the royal father urged the community not to lose hope, calling for unity and collective effort.
He also promised to work closely with community leaders and lawful authorities to safeguard the area, while promoting the dignity and inclusion of women.
The coronation ceremony featured colourful cultural displays, traditional performances, and communal celebrations, marking a new chapter in the history of Uhueze-Nenwe Autonomous Community.
