Tinubu attends emergency ECOWAS meeting on Guinea-Bissau political crisis
November 27, 2025
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday participated in an extraordinary virtual summit convened by the Economic Community of West African States to address the unfolding political crisis in Guinea-Bissau. The high-level session brought together regional leaders in a swift diplomatic intervention following the country’s latest military takeover.
The emergency discussions centred on restoring constitutional order and preventing further deterioration of stability after soldiers seized power on Wednesday, detained President Umaro Embalo, and announced Gen. Horta Nta Na Man as head of a one-year transitional administration. The development marks yet another episode in a nation plagued by repeated coups and instability since independence from Portugal more than five decades ago.
Nigeria, in a statement by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, condemned the military action, describing it as an illegal seizure of power that threatens regional democratic progress. The statement reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to defending constitutional governance across West Africa.
Tinubu, who previously chaired the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for two consecutive terms until June 2025, emphasized the need for firm regional coordination to prevent contagion effects from recurring coups within the bloc. He underscored the importance of collective action to strengthen institutions and deter further violations of democratic norms.
The ECOWAS meeting also reviewed past interventions and ongoing challenges facing the bloc, noting the rising trend of unconstitutional government changes in recent years. Leaders agreed that Guinea-Bissau’s situation required immediate pressure and coordinated diplomacy to avoid wider destabilisation.
Thursday’s session reinforced the organisation’s commitment to upholding democracy, safeguarding regional peace and ensuring that military disruptions do not become entrenched. The ECOWAS meeting concluded with a call for sustained engagement until normalcy is restored.
