The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has raised alarm that more than 33 million Nigerians could face severe hunger in Nigeria and malnutrition in 2026 unless immediate action is taken.
Dr. Abubakar Kende, Secretary General of the society, made the disclosure on Friday in Abuja during a ceremony unveiling the NRCS Nutrition Advocacy Plan.
The event also honoured Ambassador Layla Ali Othman as the Nutrition Ambassador of the society.
Dr. Kende expressed optimism that the challenge of hunger and malnutrition could be significantly reduced with the support of philanthropists such as Othman.
“The society looks forward to having Ambassador Othman as the face of our Anti-Hunger and Malnutrition efforts,” Kende said.
He added that the Nutrition Advocacy Plan would set the tone for impactful initiatives aimed at combating hunger and malnutrition across Nigeria.
“With the help of our Nutrition Ambassador and other stakeholders, the society hopes to make a meaningful difference in the fight against hunger in Nigeria,” he said.
Ambassador Othman expressed gratitude to the Red Cross Society for the recognition and pledged her support in driving awareness and interventions against malnutrition.
