Strike action at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, has been suspended as the four in-house unions ended their two-week warning action declared on November 3, 2025.
The suspension of the strike was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by Mr Saminu Salihu-Haiba, Secretary of the UMYU in-house unions, which include ASUU, SSANU, NAAT and NASU.
According to the statement, the unions agreed to suspend the strike after a series of negotiations with the committee set up by the Katsina State Government. The decision takes immediate effect to allow implementation of measures aimed at restoring industrial harmony on campus.
Salihu-Haiba explained that the committee committed to addressing the core issues that triggered the strike, including stopping the takeover of the university’s portal by a third-party company, resolving salary structure concerns and addressing policy-related matters affecting staff welfare.
He added that the committee’s readiness to enforce all agreements captured in the jointly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was central to ending the strike.
However, one major issue remains unresolved, the 34 months arrears owed to staff. Salihu-Haiba revealed that the Chancellor, Senator Ibrahim Idah (Wazirin Katsina), personally intervened and appealed to members to suspend the strike temporarily while efforts are made to settle the outstanding arrears.
“In the spirit of respect and trust in the Chancellor’s assurance, our members have agreed to suspend action on this demand,” he said.
The unions expressed appreciation to the university visitor, acknowledged the Chancellor’s intervention, commended the committee’s efforts, and thanked students for their patience throughout the strike.
