▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎Commits $7.5 million to AI-driven healthcare innovation hub in Nigeria
In a landmark event held in Lagos on Tuesday night, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu conferred the prestigious national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Microsoft co-founder and global philanthropist, Mr. Bill Gates. The award recognizes Gates’ longstanding contributions to healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation in Nigeria through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Speaking during the award ceremony, President Tinubu commended Bill Gates for his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of millions of Nigerians. “Mr. Gates has shown a rare dedication to the development of Africa, particularly Nigeria. Through his foundation, he has supported our health institutions, empowered communities, and backed innovative solutions in public health and education,” the President stated.
The CFR honour places Gates among an elite group of international figures recognized by Nigeria for their exceptional contributions to national development. In the past decade, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has invested heavily in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, particularly in the fight against polio, malaria, and maternal and child mortality. The Foundation’s support has also extended to strengthening routine immunization systems and primary healthcare delivery across the country.
During the event, Gates announced a new $7.5 million commitment towards the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) innovation hub in Nigeria, aimed at transforming healthcare delivery and diagnostics. “Nigeria has the talent and potential to lead the continent in AI-driven solutions for health and development. We are proud to support this initiative that will shape the future of healthcare in the region,” he said.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, who also attended the ceremony, lauded Gates’ investment in Nigeria’s health system. “This recognition is well deserved. Bill Gates has been one of the most consistent partners in our efforts to build a resilient healthcare system. The AI hub is a welcome innovation that will support precision medicine and health access for underserved communities,” Pate noted.
Also present at the ceremony was the President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who described Gates as “a true friend of Africa and a visionary leader in philanthropy.” Dangote emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between global partners and African institutions to harness technology and improve public health outcomes.
The CFR conferment and Gates’ new AI commitment signal a renewed partnership between Nigeria and global innovation leaders. As Gates’ philanthropic footprint deepens in the country, expectations are high that his investments will accelerate progress in health, education, and tech-driven solutions, positioning Nigeria as a continental hub for innovation and development.
