The late Ozo Donatus Chijioke Ugwu, Enyidulu II of Nike, was a man whose life was marked by dedication, service, and an unwavering commitment to his community. Born on August 7, 1958, he was the first of eight children of the late Chief R.O. Ugwu (Enyiduru I of Ugwogo Nike) and the late Mrs. Agnes Ugwu. His parents, both passionate about education, instilled in him a love for learning and a strong sense of responsibility—values that defined his life’s journey.

Ozo Ugwu’s educational foundation was built at St. Mary’s Primary School, Uwani, Enugu, after which he proceeded to the College of Immaculate Conception (CIC), Enugu. He later attended St. Vincent Secondary School, Agbogwugwu, before enrolling at the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, where he earned a National Certificate in Education (NCE) in Mathematics and Physics. His academic pursuit did not stop there. Determined to broaden his knowledge, he further studied Mathematics at the Anambra State University of Technology, Enugu.

His passion for education led him to a teaching career at Community Secondary School, Ugwogo Nike, where he became a beloved Mathematics and Physics teacher. His ability to simplify complex problems earned him the affectionate nickname “Mr. Solutions” among his students. However, his ambitions extended beyond the classroom. He relocated to Lagos, where he worked as Operations Manager at Zeeko Shipping Companies. Eventually, he embraced entrepreneurship and founded DUCO Nigeria Limited and Agnes-Ada Farms Limited in Enugu, serving as the Managing Director of both companies.

Beyond his professional life, Ozo Ugwu was deeply involved in public service and politics, particularly in youth development. He was the foundation chairman of both the Amalgamation of Nigerian Youths Association (ANYA) and the National Unity Foundation (NUF) in Enugu State, where he championed initiatives that empowered young people. His leadership roles extended to serving as a member of the Governing Council of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Public Relations Officer of the National Republican Convention (NRC), and First Vice Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State.

His contributions to community service were numerous. He was a key member of the Local Organizing Committee for Enugu sub-SEA, the Committee on Revenue Generation and Mobilization for Enugu North Local Government Area, and served as Head of the Science Department at Ugwogo Nike Community Secondary School. Through these roles, he played a significant part in shaping policies and fostering development in his community.

Ozo Ugwu was not only a leader but also a devoted family man. In 1992, he married his beloved wife, Elizabeth Nneka, and together they built a loving home blessed with four children – Ada, Chizzy, Lota, and Dumebi. He was also a caring brother to his siblings: Engr. George Ugwu, Obinna Ugwu, Chukwudi Ugwu, Mrs. Okeke, Mrs. Amaka Onwuama, Mrs. Nneka Nnaji, and Mrs. Chichi Ukaigwe. His strong family ties reflected his deep sense of loyalty and responsibility, qualities that endeared him to many.

Ozo Donatus Chijioke Ugwu passed away in early February 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will not be forgotten. His funeral service was held at St. Joseph’s Parish, Ugwogo-Nike, and presided over by Monsignor Prof. Obiora Ike, who used the occasion to call for self-reflection. “As we mourn the passing of our brother Donatus this Easter, may we also take the opportunity to ponder on our lives,” he said.

The homily was delivered by Rev. Fr. Dr. Anthony Owoh, who emphasized the importance of living with purpose and preparing for the inevitable. “Let it be appealing to you to be in one accord with the Creator,” he stated. “What is my purpose on earth? To enjoy life, marry, and have children? What will people say when I am gone? No matter how important you think you are, once you’re gone, that importance wanes and may die away. This Lenten season is a period for us to take a good look at our lives for possible redress. Prepare yourself at all times because you do not know when the trumpet will sound.”

His final rites drew a gathering of distinguished personalities from different walks of life. Among those in attendance were former Minister of Power and Chairman of Geometric Power Group, Professor Bart Nnaji, and his wife, Agatha; Their Royal Highnesses Igwe Damian Ikechukwu Ede of Amankpaka, Igwe Bertrand Ndubuisi, and Igwe Emma Ugwu of Ibagwa Nike. Others included Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, PDP Chairman of Enugu State, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, who contested for the Enugu State governorship on the Labour Party platform, and many other notable figures.

His in-law, a former Commissioner for Works and husband to Mrs. Nneka Nnaji, was accompanied by the Oganiru Age Grade of Akpoga Nike, bringing cultural significance to the ceremony. The burial reception, held at the Mbuluiyiukwu Development Center, was a grand celebration of his life, with an outpouring of tributes from family, friends, and well-wishers. Traditional masquerades added color to the event, highlighting the rich cultural heritage that Ozo Ugwu proudly upheld.

His passing is a profound loss, not only to his family but also to the entire Nike community and all who knew him. He was a man of vision, integrity, and selflessness. Whether in education, politics, business, or community development, he left an enduring mark. His legacy of service, leadership, and generosity will continue to inspire generations to come.

Ozo Donatus Chijioke Ugwu lived a purposeful life, touching countless lives through his work and commitment to humanity. Though he is no longer physically present, his contributions and values will forever be remembered. GMTNewsng
