Zurmi is in mourning as President Bola Tinubu pays tribute to the late Emir, Alhaji Bello Sulaiman, praising his courage, wisdom and commitment to peace amid security challenges.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Emir of Zurmi, Sarkin Zamfaran Zurmi, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Bello Sulaiman, describing the late monarch as a stabilising figure who demonstrated courage and wisdom during a challenging period.
The Emir died on Monday, August 31, 2026, after spending about five years on the throne.
In a condolence message issued by the Presidency, President Tinubu extended his sympathies to the family of the late traditional ruler, the Zurmi Emirate Council, the Zamfara State Government and its people, as well as the entire traditional institution in Nigeria.
The President described the late Sarkin Zamfaran Zurmi as a highly respected traditional ruler who led his people with wisdom, dignity and unwavering commitment at a particularly difficult time.
Tinubu noted that during his five-year reign, Alhaji Sulaiman provided courageous leadership in guiding the Zurmi Emirate through serious security challenges affecting Zamfara State and the wider North-West.
He said the late monarch remained committed to promoting peace, unity and resilience among his people despite the difficult circumstances confronting the emirate.
“His Royal Highness was a stabilising figure whose wise counsel and dedication to peace-building were invaluable not only to Zurmi Emirate but to Zamfara State and our nation’s efforts to restore lasting peace in the North-West,” the President said.
The death of the traditional ruler has drawn condolences from political leaders and institutions across Zamfara State, where he was widely recognised for his contributions to peace and the traditional institution.
Reports indicate that the Emir died at the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
Alhaji Bello Sulaiman ascended the throne of the Zurmi Emirate in 2021 and spent approximately five years leading the emirate before his death.
President Tinubu said the late monarch’s leadership and counsel had contributed not only to the stability of Zurmi but also to broader efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace across Zamfara and the North-West.
The President prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the shortcomings of the departed Emir, reward his good deeds and grant him Aljannah Firdaus.
He also prayed for comfort and fortitude for the royal family, the people of Zurmi, the Zamfara State Government and all those mourning the death of the traditional ruler.
The passing of the Emir marks another significant loss for the Zurmi Emirate, as residents and leaders reflect on the legacy of a monarch who served during one of the most challenging periods in the region’s recent history.
