A fire outbreak has destroyed about 110 shops at Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano metropolis, causing significant property losses among traders.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Kano by its Public Relations Officer, Kabiru Isah-Jafaru, on behalf of the Director, Alhaji Sani Anas.

Anas said the Service received a distress call from a timber dealer on Saturday, prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters from various stations to contain the blaze.

He explained that the firefighters were dispatched to prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the market.

“On arrival, the firefighters discovered that the fire had engulfed several sections of the market, affecting 75 permanent and 35 temporary shops,” he said.

The director said firefighters eventually brought the situation under control and prevented the flames from spreading to other parts of the market.

He, however, urged traders and other business owners to remain vigilant and adopt appropriate fire prevention measures as the harmattan season approaches.

Anas also advised members of the public to exercise caution when handling fire and other combustible materials capable of triggering fire outbreaks.

The Kano State Fire Service reiterated the importance of observing basic fire safety precautions to protect lives, businesses and property, particularly in markets where highly combustible materials are stored.
