President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 years of public service, highlighting Nigeria-India relations and their shared interests as Global South nations.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 25th anniversary of his assumption of office as head of government in Gujarat.
In a message issued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Tinubu described the milestone as significant and commended Modi’s long period of public service.
Modi first became Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001 and served in that position for more than 12 years before becoming Prime Minister of India in 2014.
According to the Nigerian President, Modi’s 25 years in government represent a rare period of continuous public service in a democratic system.
Tinubu said Modi’s tenure had been associated with development initiatives in areas including infrastructure, digital public services, financial inclusion and innovation.
He also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and India, describing the two countries as strategic partners with shared interests across several sectors.
The President recalled Modi’s State Visit to Abuja in November 2024, during which Nigeria conferred on the Indian Prime Minister the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
Tinubu said the visit provided fresh momentum for bilateral cooperation in areas including trade and investment, energy, defence and security, health, education and technology.
The President also pointed to the shared positions of Nigeria and India as leading countries of the Global South and democracies advocating greater inclusiveness and representation in the international system.
“Today, 7 October 2026, marks 25 years since he first assumed office in 2001 as Head of Government and Chief Minister of Gujarat,” Tinubu said.
He expressed confidence that relations between Nigeria and India would continue to deepen under Modi’s leadership.
Tinubu wished Modi good health, strength and continued success in his service to the people of India.
