Nkanu East Council and the Enugu State Electrification Agency are exploring stronger collaboration to improve electricity supply and address power challenges across communities in the area.

The Nkanu East Local Government Council has opened discussions with the Enugu State Electrification Agency (ESEA) on measures to improve electricity supply and address power-related challenges across communities in the area.

The engagement brought together officials of the council and ESEA, with discussions focusing on possible areas of collaboration and practical interventions that could strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve access to reliable power in Nkanu East.

The development comes amid broader electricity infrastructure initiatives by the Enugu State Government. In August 2026, the state commenced construction of three new 33KV feeders from the Ugwuaji Transmission Station, with the project expected to improve power supply to communities in Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Awgu and Aninri Local Government Areas.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ESEA, Engr. Christopher Nnamani Ezeoha, has said the agency’s mandate includes developing and implementing the state’s electrification strategy and working with public and private stakeholders to expand reliable, sustainable and affordable electricity supply.

Speaking on the engagement, the Nkanu East Council Chairman, Engr. Mike Chikosolu Ogbuekwe, stressed the importance of improved electricity supply to businesses, livelihoods and economic activities across the local government.

He said the council would continue to engage relevant government agencies and stakeholders in identifying practical solutions to infrastructure challenges affecting residents.

The discussions also examined opportunities for closer coordination between Nkanu East Council and ESEA, particularly in areas where joint efforts could support improved electricity access and infrastructure development.

The council said sustained dialogue and collaboration with relevant institutions would remain important in addressing development challenges and delivering interventions with tangible benefits for residents.

Nkanu East has also featured in wider rural electrification initiatives. The Federal Government’s Rural Electrification Agency, for instance, activated a 100kWp solar hybrid mini-grid in Uhuafor Nomeh, Nkanu East, in 2024 to serve more than 3,000 people in the community.

The latest engagement between the council and ESEA is expected to provide a basis for further discussions on practical interventions aimed at strengthening electricity supply and supporting economic activity across communities in Nkanu East.
