President Tinubu celebrates Chief Olu Falae at 88, highlighting his public service, NADECO role and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated elder statesman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Samuel Olu Falae, on his 88th birthday, praising his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, public service and national development.
Falae, who also served as Minister of Finance and was a co-founder of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), marked his 88th birthday on September 21, 2026.
In a birthday message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Falae as one of the Nigerians whose contributions to the country’s political and democratic evolution had earned him an enduring place in national history.
The President highlighted Falae’s distinguished public service, particularly his tenure as SGF and Minister of Finance, as well as his broader contributions as an administrator.
Tinubu also commended Falae’s role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement and his advocacy for the restoration of democratic governance during the military era.
The President said Falae and other members of the NADECO movement advocated democratic rule and defended constitutional principles and citizens’ rights during a difficult period in Nigeria’s political history.
“His contributions to public administration, economic development and the struggle for democracy are significant chapters in our national journey,” Tinubu said.
The President described Falae as a patriot whose life reflected a commitment to national service, adding that the sacrifices made by his generation remained a reminder of the responsibility to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and build a more prosperous country.
Tinubu said Falae’s courage, wisdom and dedication to Nigeria were worthy of recognition as he marked the milestone birthday.
He prayed that God would grant the elder statesman good health, wisdom and renewed strength to continue contributing to Nigeria’s development.
Chief Falae remains one of the prominent figures associated with Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement of the 1990s and previously held senior positions in government, including SGF and Minister of Finance.
