Wage award payments owed to eligible federal public servants will be settled before mid-August, the Federal Government has assured, as it also pledged to fast-track promotion arrears and other outstanding workers’ entitlements.
ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has assured public servants that outstanding wage awards will be paid before the middle of August, reaffirming its commitment to meeting obligations owed to Nigerian workers.
The assurance was conveyed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Head of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Finance, Efe Ovuakporie.
According to the statement, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, gave the assurance during a meeting with labour leaders led by the National President of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC), Trade Side, Comrade Kabiru Minjibir.
Oyedele said the Federal Government had already begun addressing several labour-related concerns before receiving the council’s formal submissions.
He reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to fulfilling promises made to workers through sustained dialogue and constructive engagement.
“The objective is to build confidence by ensuring the government honours every commitment made,” the minister said.
He disclosed that the process for releasing the outstanding wage awards had reached its final stage and expressed confidence that eligible public servants would begin receiving payments before the middle of August.
The minister also directed relevant government officials to review the labour union’s submissions and accelerate action on all outstanding issues.
Acknowledging concerns over implementation delays, Oyedele pledged greater transparency, consultation and timely action in resolving workers’ welfare matters.
The government further assured public servants that outstanding promotion arrears are also being processed in line with approved procedures.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Raymond Omachi, pledged stronger collaboration with organised labour, assuring workers that approved entitlements would be processed without unnecessary delays.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Mr. Mohammed Danjuma, said progress had been made in resolving outstanding workers’ entitlements.
According to him, Batch Seven promotion arrears, which were previously omitted, are now being processed alongside Batch Nine.
Danjuma added that the government is working with relevant agencies to address issues relating to peculiar allowances and other outstanding labour concerns.
The Director of Cash Management, Mrs. Christiana Osho, confirmed that reconciliation of the outstanding wage awards had been completed and that the payment release process was at its final stage.
Earlier, the National President of the JPSNC, Trade Side, Comrade Kabiru Minjibir, urged the Federal Government to resolve pending labour issues without further delay.
He identified outstanding wage awards, promotion arrears, salary relativity for health workers and peculiar allowances as key issues requiring urgent attention, noting that prompt implementation would strengthen industrial harmony and boost workers’ confidence in government.
