The Lagos Waste Management Authority seals commercial premises along the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba corridor following persistent illegal refuse dumping on public road medians.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has carried out a major enforcement exercise along the busy Tejuosho–Ojuelegba commercial corridor, sealing dozens of shops and business premises over habitual illegal refuse disposal on public road medians.

The crackdown, executed by LAWMA’s specialized Waste Investigation Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team, followed repeated environmental warnings issued to local traders.

In an official statement released by LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi, the agency disclosed that continuous public awareness drives and stakeholder engagements had failed to deter business operators from violating state environmental regulations.

LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized that decisive enforcement became necessary to safeguard public health and prevent structural damage to state infrastructure. He noted that despite extensive consultation with market leaders and trade associations, persistent indiscriminate dumping continued to block drainage channels and deface major thoroughfares.

Dr. Gbadegesin stated that affected commercial properties will remain shut until owners fully satisfy prescribed sanitation requirements and establish verifiable waste collection agreements with accredited Private Sector Participants (PSP) operators. LAWMA reiterated that road medians and drainage systems are not designated waste dumps, warning that strict enforcement operations will continue across Lagos to mitigate flood risks and maintain urban cleanliness.
