The Ogun State House of Assembly has officially passed a resolution exonerating former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of financial embezzlement charges, formally commuting his 2024 impeachment into a historic resignation.
The Ogun State House of Assembly has formally exonerated its former Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, of all financial embezzlement allegations linked to his high-profile impeachment in January 2024.
During a plenary session held on Wednesday at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the lawmakers adopted a comprehensive resolution that effectively commuted Oluomo’s removal from office via impeachment to an official resignation.
The resolution followed the presentation of a detailed report by the Committee of the Whole House, delivered by Deputy Speaker Mrs. Lateefat Ajayi, which addressed a formal review motion submitted by the former presiding officer on March 31.
The adoption of the committee’s recommendations was moved by Deputy Speaker Ajayi, seconded by lawmaker Yusuf Amosun, and passed unanimously via a voice vote across the legislative floor. In its findings, the House established that the specific accusation of financial embezzlement was never formally articulated in the official notice of removal served on Oluomo during his 2024 impeachment proceedings.
Furthermore, after re-evaluating the documentary evidence and administrative records available to the Assembly, the House determined that the allegations of financial impropriety could not be substantiated or sustained under closer scrutiny.
Citing Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which guarantees the fundamental right to fair hearing, the Assembly acknowledged Oluomo’s persistent petitions requesting either concrete proof of wrongdoing or a full legal exoneration.
Consequent to the review, the House resolved to excise the embezzlement charges completely from the official records detailing his removal, ensuring the claims no longer form part of the historical justification for his leadership exit. Lawmakers emphasized that converting the impeachment into a formal resignation was executed in the overarching interest of legislative camaraderie, institutional unity, and enduring political reconciliation within the state legislature.
