An Abuja High Court has ordered that a 32-year-old man, Israel Friday, be remanded in a correctional facility over the alleged stabbing of his neighbour which resulted in the amputation of the victim’s arm.
The police arraigned Friday on a charge of attempted culpable homicide. The presiding judge, Justice M. S. Idris, gave the remand order following a strong objection to the defendant’s bail application by the prosecution, who argued that the accused poses a continuing threat to the victim.
The incident occurred at Angwan Tiv, Zone 7, in the Lugbe area of Abuja, where Friday reportedly engaged in an argument with his neighbour, Theophilus Edache. The dispute escalated, and Friday allegedly stabbed Edache, inflicting a severe and grievous injury that later forced medical personnel to amputate the victim’s left hand.
The prosecution counsel, Donatus Abah, stated that the offence directly contravenes the provisions of sections 229(1) and 248 of the Penal Code law. Friday, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
During the bail application, the defence counsel, Noah Abdul, prayed the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms, arguing that the charge is not a capital offence and is therefore legally bailable.
Opposing the application, the prosecutor disclosed that he had filed a counter-affidavit accompanied by photographic evidence of the victim’s amputated arm.
Abah argued that the victim has been rendered highly vulnerable and that releasing the defendant could place the victim’s life in further danger. Justice Idris subsequently adjourned the case until May 13 to deliver a ruling on the bail application and to commence the trial.
