Lagos Taskforce has detained 50 suspected hoodlums during a statewide sanitation crackdown targeting environmental violations and public disorder.
The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) has detained 50 suspected hoodlums during a statewide sanitation crackdown aimed at enforcing environmental compliance.
Chairman of the agency, Mr. Adetayo Akerele, confirmed the development in a statement issued on April 27, 2026, through the spokesperson, Mr. Abdulraheem Gbadeyan.
According to Akerele, the taskforce monitored sanitation activities across several areas known for repeated environmental violations.
Locations covered during the crackdown included Ikeja, Iyana-Ipaja, Abule-Egba, Agege, Iyana-Oworo, Lagos Island, Lekki–Ajah Expressway, Ijora Causeway, Ijora Underbridge, and Iddo.
He said authorities recorded significant compliance with restrictions on vehicular movement and commercial activities during the sanitation exercise.
However, some residents reportedly failed to actively participate in the monthly cleanup exercise.
In a related development, the taskforce arrested 50 individuals along the Lekki–Epe Expressway for allegedly disturbing public peace during the sanitation period.
Akerele said some of the suspects were linked to actions threatening public infrastructure, including billboards and road signage.
He added that all those arrested in the crackdown would be charged to court in line with the law.
The chairman explained that the monthly sanitation exercise targets indiscriminate waste disposal, open defecation, street trading, and other environmental offences.
He reiterated that violators would be prosecuted under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law, 2017.
Akerele stressed that consistent enforcement and public cooperation remain vital to achieving lasting environmental order.
He also urged young people to avoid street football during sanitation hours and instead participate in keeping their communities clean.
The chairman reaffirmed the state government’s zero-tolerance policy, noting that sustained compliance is necessary to make Lagos cleaner, safer, and more liveable through continued crackdown measures.
