Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide condemns violence and property destruction in East London, South Africa, following the installation of an “Igwe Ndigbo,” urges calm and respect for local laws.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has condemned attacks on residents and destruction of property in East London following the reported installation of an “Igwe Ndigbo” in the area.
In a statement issued in Enugu, the organisation’s National Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, expressed concern over the unrest and called for urgent steps to prevent further escalation.
The group described the violence as unwarranted and urged relevant authorities in South Africa to restore calm and protect lives and property.

Ohanaeze noted that Igbo people are globally recognised for their peaceful disposition, entrepreneurial drive and respect for the laws of host communities. It added that the organisation dissociates itself from any action that violates the customs, laws and traditions of countries where Igbo people reside.
The statement clarified that the reported installation of an “Igwe Ndigbo na East London” amounts only to a nominal observance and is not backed by any law.
According to the group, in alignment with the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers, it does not recognise the conferment of “Eze Ndigbo” titles outside Igbo land.
Ohanaeze advised Igbo communities in the diaspora to adopt non-kingship designations such as “Onyendu” for internal coordination to avoid misrepresentation.
The organisation further urged Igbo residents abroad to conduct themselves with discipline and respect for the laws and traditions of their host countries.
It also called on the government and people of South Africa to uphold the longstanding spirit of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect between Nigerians and South Africans, while appealing for calm and constructive engagement among all parties involved.
