President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the PiCNG mandate to include electric vehicles, broadening Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy and accelerating CNG and EV infrastructure nationwide.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the mandate of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas to include electric vehicles as part of efforts to reposition Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy.

Following the approval, the initiative will now operate as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles and will coordinate nationwide deployment of gas-powered and electric mobility solutions.

Under the expanded mandate, PiCNG & EV will continue driving the rollout of compressed natural gas infrastructure, including mother and daughter stations, integrated refuelling units, CNG-powered vehicles, equipment, and nationwide vehicle conversion programmes.

The initiative will also lead the development and deployment of electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and related investments across the country.

The presidency said gas remains a competitive and strategic transportation fuel, leveraging Nigeria’s abundant resources to reduce costs, strengthen energy security and conserve foreign exchange. The inclusion of electric vehicles is expected to further support affordable, efficient and environmentally responsible mobility.

Tinubu also directed the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV to immediately establish a coordinated process for rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits nationwide, ensuring they are accessible to Nigerians at affordable costs.

To achieve this, the initiative will collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria, financial institutions and other stakeholders to design cost-effective financing structures that would make vehicle conversions widely accessible.

The President further ordered accelerated deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units to expand access to CNG infrastructure while permanent facilities continue to scale across the country.
