President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed the tenure of Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi as Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), approving a fresh five-year term for the security chief.

The reappointment took effect on Friday, February 27, according to an official statement from the Presidency.

Dr Audi was first appointed Commandant-General in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, and his initial tenure ended last week after he participated in activities marking the 2026 World Civil Defence Day at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja.

With the renewal, Audi is expected to resume duties with a new mandate aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of the corps.

Tinubu charged the NSCDC boss to reposition the organisation to play a more significant role in national security, particularly as the police concentrate on core responsibilities such as tackling banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.

Dr Audi was born on September 30, 1967, in Laminga Town, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

He obtained a Teachers’ Grade II Certificate from Teachers’ College, Jengre, Plateau State, in 1987, and later earned the Nigeria Certificate in Education from the College of Education, Akwanga, in 1992.

He graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1995 with a degree in Physical and Health Education, before obtaining a Master’s degree in Public Administration from University of Calabar in 2001.

Audi later earned a PhD in Public Administration from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, in 2014, and a Master’s degree in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice from Ahmadu Bello University in 2019.

He joined the NSCDC in November 1996 as a volunteer and became a Divisional Officer in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State after completing his basic officer training in 1997.

Over the years, he served in several state commands and rose through the ranks before being promoted to Commandant in 2007 and deployed to the office of the Commandant-General at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja.
