President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday reiterated the need for the establishment of State Police, saying decentralised policing had become necessary to address Nigeria’s growing security challenges.

Tinubu made the call at the State House, Abuja, during an interfaith breaking of fast with members of the House of Representatives Nigeria.

The President said state police would strengthen internal security by allowing faster response to threats at the grassroots level, adding that the current security situation requires structural reforms.

He also pledged to support efforts aimed at reducing the high turnover of lawmakers in future elections in order to improve legislative continuity.

“I will do everything within our party’s power. In several constituencies, there are rotational arrangements. I wish that everyone would return,” Tinubu said.

The President commended the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, for what he described as exemplary leadership and dedication to nation-building.

He expressed optimism about the economy, noting that his administration’s reforms were beginning to yield results.

“It was initially difficult for many to understand the direction of my thinking, but we are now out of the dark tunnel. Many thought subsidy removal could be reversed, but the tension has subsided,” he added.

Tinubu thanked members of the National Assembly for supporting key policies of his administration, saying collaboration between the executive and legislature had helped stabilise the economy.

Earlier, Abbas thanked the President for sustaining the tradition of hosting lawmakers during the fasting period, describing the coincidence of Ramadan and Lent as significant.

He praised Tinubu’s leadership, saying many lawmakers who were initially sceptical about government policies had become convinced by recent economic improvements.

According to the Speaker, high turnover of lawmakers after elections weakens legislative effectiveness because new members require time to understand parliamentary procedures.

He appealed for the President’s support in ensuring greater continuity in the National Assembly, noting that stability in the legislature would strengthen governance and policy implementation.
