The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has reaffirmed that the issue surrounding Sundry charges for the 2025/2026 academic session has been conclusively resolved, warning external elements against attempts to incite unrest within the institution.

The University Management stated that the matter was amicably settled between the Governing Council and the leadership of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) after months of structured consultations and negotiations.

According to the Management, the Governing Council, through the University authorities, approved a 60 percent increment in Sundry charges on Friday, January 16, 2026, following a formal request by the students. This decision replaced the earlier 100 percent increment initially proposed by the Council and was described as a fair compromise reached in the best interest of both students and the University.

The resolution followed deliberations that began at the 294th meeting of the Governing Council in July 2025, where a Committee on Sundry and Accommodation Charges was established. At the Council’s 297th meeting in December 2025, the committee recommended a 100 percent increment due to prevailing economic realities and the urgent need to maintain and upgrade critical university infrastructure.

Subsequently, the University Management held several consultative meetings with the SUG. During these engagements, students initially proposed increments of 25 percent and 30 percent before eventually requesting Council’s approval for a 60 percent increment, which was accepted.

Under the approved schedule, first-year students in the Faculties of Medicine and Social Sciences will now pay ₦189,240 and ₦173,640 respectively, instead of ₦243,900 and ₦225,900 earlier proposed. Students in other levels of the same faculties will pay ₦172,200 and ₦156,200, down from ₦203,400 and ₦185,400. Sundry charges vary across faculties and levels of study.

The University confirmed that the approved charges have already been uploaded to students’ portals and payments are ongoing.

As part of the agreement, students are allowed to pay the charges in two instalments across the two semesters to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians. Additionally, accommodation fees have been frozen for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Despite the transparent resolution process, the University expressed concern over attempts by external individuals to exploit the issue and instigate crisis within the institution. Management described such persons as merchants of unrest pursuing ulterior motives.

The University warned that anyone found engaging in violence, intimidation, or destruction of property on any UNN campus would be treated as a criminal and prosecuted accordingly.

Management urged students to remain calm, vigilant, and focused on their academic pursuits, cautioning them against being misled by external actors seeking to benefit from instability.

“The University of Nigeria remains peaceful, with staff and students carrying out their academic and administrative duties. Troublemakers should stay away from our campuses,” the statement concluded.
