The Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) has commenced the construction of police quarters in Enugu State, marking a significant step toward improving the welfare and working conditions of police personnel.

The project was formally launched on Tuesday with the groundbreaking ceremony for a six-man rank-and-file police quarters at Ozalla in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mohammed Sheidu, described the initiative as a landmark achievement not only for the Trust Fund but also for officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

He explained that the construction of the accommodation facility was part of deliberate efforts to bridge the longstanding housing gap affecting police officers, noting that inadequate accommodation has continued to impact morale, efficiency, and overall wellbeing.

“This intervention reflects our resolve to provide practical and sustainable solutions to challenges faced by police personnel,” Sheidu said.

He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to security sector reforms and commended the Enugu State Government for providing the land for the project.

“The land provided is more than a site; it is a symbol of partnership, trust, and shared responsibility. It demonstrates the governor’s commitment to security and to the welfare of those who protect our communities,” he stated.

According to Sheidu, the NPTF firmly believes that a well-housed police officer is more motivated, focused, and effective in the discharge of duty.

“This project is not just about buildings. It is about dignity, stability, and creating an enabling environment for officers and their families,” he added.

He further disclosed that the project forms part of a broader nationwide intervention by the Trust Fund, which includes the construction and rehabilitation of police barracks, training institutions, operational facilities, and other welfare-focused initiatives.

Sheidu assured residents of Enugu State and the Nigeria Police Force that the project would be executed with transparency, quality, and speed, emphasizing the Trust Fund’s commitment to value for money and long-term impact.

In a goodwill message, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the NPTF for initiating the project, describing it as timely and strategic.

Represented by the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Giwa, the IGP noted that the intervention aligns with the Federal Government’s ongoing comprehensive reforms in critical areas of police welfare and working conditions.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to providing the necessary support for the successful execution of the project.

Egbetokun added that the construction of the quarters would significantly enhance the working environment of police officers serving in the Ozalla community and Enugu State at large.

He urged contractors and engineers handling the project to maintain the highest standards of quality, professionalism, and integrity throughout the construction process.

In their separate remarks, the Traditional Ruler of Ishi-Ozalla, HRH Sylvanus Okeke, and the Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Council, Hon. John Chukwuma Ogbodo, expressed gratitude to the NPTF for siting the project in Nkanu West, pledging community support to ensure its sustainability.
