Rep. Afam Ogene has expressed condolences to the family of a mother and daughter killed in a building collapse at Okpoko, Anambra State, while calling for an investigation and stricter enforcement of building standards.
The member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Afam Ogene, has mourned a mother and her daughter who died following a three-storey building collapse at Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident occurred at No. 11 Emeka Ugwuanyi Street, near Anabanaba, amid heavy rainfall, claiming the lives of Mrs Happiness Ugagu and her daughter, Miss Confidence-Chiamaka Ugagu.
In a condolence message issued on Friday, October 9, Ogene described the incident as tragic and devastating, saying the loss of the mother and daughter was a painful blow to their family and the wider Okpoko community.
The lawmaker extended his sympathies to the bereaved family, their relatives and residents of the community, urging them to remain united as they cope with the tragedy.
He also commended the Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Nnamdi Ifejika, emergency responders and residents who mobilised to the scene following the collapse.
Beyond expressing condolences, Ogene called on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the building collapse.
He also urged stronger enforcement of building regulations across Ogbaru, stressing that residents’ safety must remain a priority.
The lawmaker called on landlords and property developers to ensure that buildings meet approved construction standards and maintain the structural integrity required to protect occupants and neighbouring properties.
He further advised residents to report buildings showing signs of structural distress to the appropriate authorities for prompt assessment and intervention.
The incident has renewed concerns about building safety and the enforcement of construction standards in Anambra State.
Ogene prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased and asked God to grant their family and the entire Okpoko community the strength to bear the loss.
