Police in Jigawa State have arrested a 27-year-old man over the death of his elder brother, who allegedly suffered fatal burns after a fire was set inside his residence in Gwaram LGA.

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Abbas Ibrahim, over the death of his elder brother, Basiru Shuaibu, following a fire incident in Gwaram Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Dutse on Tuesday.

According to Shiisu, the suspect allegedly entered his elder brother’s residence, poured petrol inside his room and set it ablaze.

The police spokesperson said Shuaibu and his wife sustained serious burns in the incident and were taken by relatives to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment.

Shuaibu later died from his injuries while receiving treatment, Shiisu said.

The suspect, according to the police, claimed to be of unsound mind. The police have not indicated in the statement that the claim has been independently established.

Shiisu said the case was being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse.

In a separate case, the spokesperson said police detained a 20-year-old suspect on October 1 over the alleged stabbing of a 25-year-old man following a dispute over a N500 balance from the purchase of a mobile phone.

The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa, Tijjani Murtala, urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and promptly report suspicious activities, threats and disputes to the police or other relevant security agencies.

Murtala assured residents that the command remained committed to taking action against people suspected of committing offences and maintaining security across the state.
