Enugu Governor Peter Mbah inaugurates new governing councils, the Civil Service Commission and TVET Board to strengthen institutions and education.
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has inaugurated the reconstituted Enugu State Civil Service Commission, governing councils of five tertiary institutions and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Board.
The inauguration took place at the Government House in Enugu, with the Governor represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.
The institutions affected are the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo, and Enugu State College of Education (Technical) (ESCET).
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Onyia said the reconstitution of the commission, boards and governing councils was part of the Mbah administration’s commitment to strengthening public institutions and improving service delivery.
He said the new appointees would play important roles in achieving the administration’s ambition of growing Enugu State’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
According to him, the state’s economic growth agenda requires an efficient civil service and a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of a 21st-century economy.
Recalling the administration’s campaign promise to run government like an enterprise, Onyia urged the appointees to prioritise transparency, traceability and accountability in carrying out their responsibilities.
He also charged them to embrace evidence-based decision-making, meritocracy, innovation, teamwork, fairness and equity.
“The cardinal principles of transparency, traceability and accountability are not mere state slogans. They reflect in the actions and decisions of our administration daily. So, you must uphold them,” he said.
Onyia further urged the appointees to review existing processes and introduce innovative approaches to improve institutional efficiency and performance.
He emphasised the importance of collaboration, warning that working in isolation could encourage corruption, duplication of responsibilities and inefficiency.
For the Enugu State Civil Service Commission, Prof. Gabriel Ajah was inaugurated as chairman, while Ambrose Nwodo was sworn in as secretary.
Other members of the commission are Christian Mbah, Mrs. Stella Ekweremadu, Mrs. Theresa Onyefuzili Ifeanyichukwu and Uzonna Emmanuel Ogarabe.
At ESUT, Barr. Victor Chukwuani was inaugurated as chairman of the Governing Council. Other members are Engr. James Ifeanyichukwu Ajibo, Dr. Eric Oluedo, Dr. Gladys Ngozi Okoro and Mr. Chukwu Chikaodiri Joy Chukwu.
Hon. Chinedu Onu was inaugurated as chairman of the IMT Governing Council, with Dr. Barth Nwankwo, Barr. Emeka Ede, Mrs. Rita Chimaobi and Prince Tony Nwonye as members.
Similarly, Dr. Amaka Ngene was inaugurated as chairman of the TVET Board. The board’s other members are Bonaventure Onu, Barr. Nnadi Eluke, Kingsley Agwu and Mrs. Joy Odike.
For Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Aniagboso Igwe was inaugurated as rector, while Deaconess Ifeoma Nwobodo became chairman of the Governing Council. Other members are Obinna Aleke, Barr. Henry Okeke and Emeka Abba.
At ESCET, Barr. Nwabueze Ugwu was inaugurated as chairman of the Governing Council, alongside members Prince Cletus Ajaegbu, Dr. Chiesonu Isiga Eruchalu, Dr. Chukwuemeka Nwatu and Theophilus Onyebeke.
Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated Civil Service Commission, Ajah thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in him and other members.
He also unveiled the commission’s guiding philosophy, tagged P.R.E.S.E.N.T, which stands for Professionalism, Responsibility, Excellence, Service to All, Exemplary Conduct, Neutrality and Team Spirit.
Ajah said the philosophy would guide the commission in discharging its responsibilities.
Onu pledged to work closely with the management of IMT to advance the institution’s development.
Similarly, Chukwuani assured that the ESUT Governing Council would collaborate with the university’s management to promote institutional growth and development. He also reaffirmed the council’s commitment to the governor’s Experiential Learning model.
Speaking with journalists, Nwobodo recalled that Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo, ranked 29th nationally when she was first appointed to lead its governing council.
She said the institution had since risen to second position among state polytechnics and fourth among federal and state polytechnics, attributing the progress to the state government’s investments in education.
The Vice-Chancellor of ESUT, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, and the TVET Board Chairman, Dr. Ngene, also commended the governor’s investments in education, saying the support had created opportunities for their respective institutions to advance.
Meanwhile, Ugwu expressed his team’s readiness to improve productivity and efficiency at ESCET.
The ceremony was attended by friends, associates and well-wishers of the newly inaugurated appointees.
