NNPP warns the public against alleged impostors ahead of 2027 and says the party has not joined any political coalition.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has warned members of the public, political parties and candidates against dealing with individuals allegedly posing as candidates or leaders of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party also said it had not joined any coalition or entered into a working arrangement with another political party ahead of the elections.
The position was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by NNPP Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr Boniface Aniebonam. Current reports also identify Aniebonam as chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, while INEC lists Dr Agbo Gilbert Major as National Chairman.
Aniebonam said some individuals allegedly expelled from the party and, according to him, affected by court judgments and INEC decisions, had been presenting themselves as NNPP leaders with the intention of obtaining money from unsuspecting political parties and candidates.
He therefore urged political parties, candidates and other stakeholders to verify the identity and authority of anyone claiming to represent the NNPP before entering into financial or political arrangements with them.
Aniebonam specifically called on the APC, NDC and ADC to exercise caution when dealing with individuals presenting themselves as representatives of the NNPP or other political parties without appropriate documentation.
He said parties or candidates who may have paid money to people claiming to represent the NNPP should seek refunds from those individuals.
“The authentic NNPP with basket of fruits logo is not a member of any coalition. It stands to reason that as a national political party, we are independent,” Aniebonam said.
He added that the NNPP would announce any decision on strategic alliances with other political parties for the 2027 elections if such arrangements became necessary.
The party’s position comes against the background of its recent leadership changes and legal disputes. INEC’s current records list Agbo Gilbert Major as National Chairman, Olaposi Sunday Oginni as National Secretary and Prince Adetoyese Omokanye as National Treasurer.
The NNPP had previously submitted details of its 2027 presidential placeholder candidate and 355 National Assembly candidates to the INEC portal in July, following the recognition of its leadership structure by the electoral commission.
Aniebonam identified the party officials he said were authorised to speak and take decisions on its behalf as himself, Agbo Major, Oginni Olaposi, Prince Toyese and Aisha Kade Onyia.
The party urged stakeholders to rely on officially recognised channels when dealing with the NNPP as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
