Former Enugu lawmakers urge Mbah to appoint more indigenes to political positions, deepen grassroots engagement and support his 2027 re-election bid.
Former members of the 6th and 7th Enugu State House of Assembly have urged Governor Peter Mbah to appoint more Enugu indigenes to political positions as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots participation and broaden the administration’s support base ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The former lawmakers made the call in a communique issued after a one-day stakeholders’ engagement convened by the Special Adviser to Governor Mbah on Legislative Matters, Mr Paul Nnajiofor, in Enugu on Friday.
Members of the 6th and 7th assemblies served between 2015 and 2023.
The former legislators called for the appointment of more indigenes of Enugu State into political positions, arguing that such appointments would strengthen grassroots participation in the administration.
“We’re calling for the appointment of more indigenous persons into political positions to strengthen grassroots participation and broaden the administration’s support base,” they said.
They also recommended sustained engagement with political leaders and stakeholders across the state, as well as increased town hall meetings and community-level consultations.
According to them, regular interaction with residents would deepen understanding and acceptance of the Mbah administration and strengthen the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former legislators unanimously expressed support for Mbah as their preferred candidate for the 2027 Enugu State governorship election.
The endorsement followed a motion moved by Mr Erochukwu Ugwueze, former representative of Igboeze South Constituency, and seconded by Mr Chinedu Okwu, who represented Aninri Constituency in the state House of Assembly.
The former lawmakers said their decision was based on what they described as Mbah’s record in good governance, infrastructure development, economic transformation and leadership.
They subsequently pledged their support for the governor’s re-election bid and called for continued engagement between the administration, political leaders and grassroots stakeholders.
The former lawmakers also commended Mbah for what they described as his efforts to align Enugu State with the Federal Government.
They said the relationship had produced “tremendous, real and visible benefits” for residents of the state.
The stakeholders called for the continuation of political consultations and grassroots mobilisation as the 2027 election approaches.
Their recommendations come as political activities intensify in Enugu ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with Mbah and the APC already positioning the administration’s development record and relationship with the Federal Government as major campaign themes.
The former legislators maintained that sustained engagement with political stakeholders and communities would be critical to consolidating the administration’s support across the state.
