Enugu Government gives roadside traders in Abakpa Nike seven days to vacate roadways as it moves to tackle traffic obstruction and one-way driving.
The Enugu State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to roadside traders operating along major roads in the Abakpa Nike axis of Enugu to vacate roadways and other areas obstructing the free flow of traffic.
The directive was issued by the state Ministry of Transport as part of an intensified campaign to address traffic violations, road obstructions and other challenges affecting movement within the area.
The Commissioner for Transport, Dr Obi Ozor, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Chinwendu Odumegwu.
According to Ozor, the sensitisation exercise covered major traffic corridors in Abakpa Nike, including Ukwu Aki, Texaco, Nowas, T-Junction and Nkwo.
He said drivers and tricycle operators were educated on the dangers and penalties associated with driving against traffic, while roadside traders were directed to remove their businesses and belongings from roadways and other obstructed areas within seven days.
The commissioner warned that motorists caught driving against traffic would have their vehicles impounded and would be required to pay the prescribed fine.
Ozor stressed that the ongoing exercise was initially focused on sensitisation and public awareness, but warned that strict enforcement and prosecution of offenders would begin immediately after the expiration of the seven-day grace period.
He urged motorists, traders and residents in Abakpa Nike to cooperate with the state government, saying the measures were aimed at improving traffic flow and making the area safer and more accessible.
“One-way driving is a death trap. Keep to your lane and keep the roads clear,” Ozor cautioned.
The latest directive is consistent with the Enugu State Government’s broader transport reforms aimed at improving traffic management and repositioning the state capital as a more efficient and accessible urban centre. Previous transport reforms announced by the ministry have included plans to reorganise the use of major city corridors as part of preparations for the state’s Bus Rapid Transit system.
