The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has introduced a ₦500,000 penalty for reckless driving by students celebrating the completion of their final examinations, as part of measures to safeguard lives and maintain order on campus.
The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has announced a ₦500,000 penalty for any student found driving recklessly within or around the university after completing final examinations.
The directive, which takes effect from July 31, was announced on Thursday by the university’s Registrar, Mr. Ambrose Ugwu, as part of efforts to prevent accidents and protect lives during post-examination celebrations.
Ugwu said the decision followed repeated incidents of reckless driving by graduating students, which have resulted in injuries and posed serious safety risks on campus.
“The reckless driving has caused incessant injuries, and we urge students to leave quietly after writing their examinations. Any vehicle impounded over such an anomaly will attract a ₦500,000 penalty,” he said.
According to the registrar, the directive is in line with a resolution of the Enugu State House of Assembly and a memo issued by the Enugu State Commissioner for Education on December 20, 2024, to the university’s Vice-Chancellor.
He warned that the institution would strictly enforce the directive and take disciplinary action against any student found violating the regulation.
Ugwu explained that any vehicle impounded for reckless driving would not be released until the owner pays the ₦500,000 penalty, while the offending student would also face additional disciplinary sanctions in accordance with the university’s regulations.
He directed all deans, directors and heads of departments to sensitise final-year students on the new policy and ensure strict compliance.
The registrar also instructed the university’s Chief Security Officer and other law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and maintain law and order throughout the campus during the examination period.
He urged members of the university community to comply fully with the directive, reaffirming ESUT’s commitment to protecting lives and property through strict enforcement of campus safety regulations.
