The Enugu State Government has approved a massive structural development package, greenlighting the construction of 19,000 residential housing units alongside several high-impact eco-tourism and road projects.
The sweeping approvals were granted during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at the Government House on Sunday, directly reinforcing Governor Peter Mbah’s overarching strategic vision to expand the subnational economy from $4 billion to $30 billion within eight years.
Briefing journalists after the session, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ben Osy Okoh, stated that the housing expansion is intentionally designed to bridge the urban housing deficit, slash property acquisition costs, and provide fully serviced residential ecosystems for citizens.
The housing roadmap is bifurcated into premium urban development and accessible mass housing. Following the completion of the 6.5-kilometer dual carriageway under Phase 1 of the New Enugu City project and the ongoing rollout of internal link roads, the state will construct 1,000 premium, fully detached four- and five-bedroom terrace housing units.
Simultaneously, the administration will break ground on a massive 18,000-unit mass housing development at the Gateway Estate.
This vast estate will feature state-funded internal road networks, standard central water reticulation systems, and primary electricity grids to create a seamlessly integrated, fully serviced residential city layout.
To complement the residential expansion and boost agricultural logistical corridors, the State Executive Council approved immediate funding for deep rural and urban engineering interventions.
Inter-Community Roadways: Immediate commencement of the 10.5-kilometer Igogoro–Amachara–Ikpamodo–Okpo–Amaada Road project to facilitate smooth agricultural and commuter transport.
Nsukka Flood Mitigation: Award of emergency drainage restoration and civil works to a reputable construction firm to address persistent flash flooding. This includes building five adjoining streets, repairing fractured culverts, and completely evacuating blocked drainage channels.
Ministry Capacity Boosting: Procurement of more than 30 heavy-duty light equipment pieces for the Ministry of Works to significantly optimize direct labor capabilities, minimize routine maintenance contract outlays, and accelerate emergency repair response times.
Secretariat Modernization: The total remodeling, structural upgrade, and completion of Wings C and D of the abandoned Enugu State Secretariat Complex in GRA—which have deteriorated since 2015—alongside standard maintenance on Wings A and B.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, announced that the council also approved three landmark tourism projects to reposition Enugu as a premium destination for luxury leisure, culture, and nature conservation.
Dame Madueke emphasized that these capital investments are structurally designed to maximize the state’s geographical advantages, create thousands of direct service-sector jobs for youth within host local government areas, and sustainably drive private hospitality capital into the state’s non-oil GDP columns.
