MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited has issued an urgent public advisory highlighting critical electrical safety measures to protect lives and prevent severe property damage during the ongoing rainy season.
MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited has urgently called on its customers to prioritize comprehensive electrical safety precautions to mitigate the heightened risks of electrocution, fatal accidents, and extensive property damage as severe weather patterns persist.
The Head of Communications for the utility company, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, delivered this vital cautionary advice on Monday in Enugu during a press briefing held in response to the intense rainfall, destructive windstorms, and flash flooding currently impacting various communities across the state.
Addressing the immediate dangers posed by unstable weather, Ezeh strongly advised residents to remain indoors or seek structurally sound shelter during heavy downpours.
He warned specifically against the common, yet highly hazardous, practice of seeking refuge under trees or standing in close proximity to electricity poles, overhead power lines, and other active distribution installations.
He explained that the combination of torrential rain and violent windstorms frequently causes soil erosion and weakens physical infrastructure, leading to collapsed trees and fallen utility poles. These incidents inevitably result in snapped high-voltage conductors and exposed live wires, creating extremely lethal traps for unsuspecting pedestrians.
In addition to outdoor hazards, the utility spokesman emphasized the necessity of maintaining strict safety protocols within residential and commercial properties. Ezeh urged consumers to never operate switches, touch sockets, or handle any plug-in electrical appliances with wet hands, noting that moisture drastically reduces skin resistance and invites severe electric shocks.
Homeowners and business operators must ensure that all internal wiring and electrical installations are professionally insulated and systematically maintained to prevent spontaneous short circuits.
Furthermore, the company directed a special appeal to parents, guardians, and teachers to keep children far away from outdoor electrical installations and visible neighborhood hazards.
Ezeh also recommended that residents proactively unplug sensitive electronic appliances during intense thunderstorms, explaining that lightning strikes can trigger massive power surges capable of destroying expensive household equipment.
To ensure rapid resolution of hazardous situations, MainPower urged the public to immediately report emergencies such as leaning poles, downed lines, or damaged transformers. Customers can reach the emergency response team directly at 08150824301, or contact the dedicated Quick Response Team through the Customer Call Centre lines at 02084700100 and 07074609958.
Ezeh concluded by reaffirming the company’s commitment to delivering safe, reliable power throughout the wet season, while reiterating that public cooperation and prompt adherence to these guidelines remain the most effective defenses against preventable electrical tragedies.
