Kano has recorded more than 70 federal road projects in the past two years, with the Ministry of Works saying the interventions are improving infrastructure, connectivity and economic development across the state.

The Federal Ministry of Works says it has executed more than 70 road projects across Kano State over the past two years, underscoring the Federal Government’s drive to improve transport infrastructure and stimulate economic development.

The Federal Controller of Works in Kano, Abdulsalam Dayyabu-Kurfi, disclosed this in an interview on Friday in Kano.

According to him, the projects, implemented between June 2024 and June 2026, include major road construction, infrastructure upgrades and emergency interventions aimed at improving connectivity within the state.

Dayyabu-Kurfi said the achievements were recorded under the leadership of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.

He revealed that the ministry commenced the dualisation of the Kano–Kwanar Danja–Hadejia Road in 2024 and also awarded the contract for the 37.018-kilometre Kano Northern Bypass.

The controller added that contracts for sections of the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano Road were re-awarded, while construction also commenced on Section I of the Kano–Maiduguri Road, covering the Kano to Shuwarin axis.

He further disclosed that the ministry completed the 38.7-kilometre Yakasai–Badume–Damargu–Marken Zalli Road during the review period.

On emergency interventions, Dayyabu-Kurfi said 27 emergency projects were awarded in 2024, with 24 completed and two still ongoing.

He added that all 12 emergency intervention projects undertaken in Kano under the programme had been successfully completed.

According to him, the projects formed part of the Federal Government’s 260 nationwide road palliative initiative, which addressed flood-damaged bridges, failed road sections and damaged culverts.

He noted that the Kano–Kwanar Danja–Hadejia Road was completed and commissioned in June 2025, while significant progress has also been achieved on the Kano Northern Bypass and Section II of the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Road.

Dayyabu-Kurfi said construction has also resumed on the Kwanar Garko–Garko–Kibiya, Dawakin Tofa–Gwarzo–Dayi, and Kano–Katsina Phase I roads.

He explained that in 2025, the ministry awarded 34 additional emergency projects, with 16 already completed, while work continues on the remaining projects.

The controller said newly awarded contracts have reached the mobilisation stage, with contractors already taking possession of some project sites.

He also disclosed that substantial completion was achieved in 2026 on the Kano section of the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano Road, while construction continues on the Kano Northern Bypass and the Kano–Maiduguri Road.

In addition, two emergency road projects located in Kaura Goje and Takai were awarded in 2026.

Dayyabu-Kurfi reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to completing all ongoing projects to the required standards, expressing confidence that the improved road network would enhance connectivity and facilitate the movement of people and goods within Kano and neighbouring states.
