FRSC has secured the conviction of a 26-year-old driver for dangerous driving, assaulting a road marshal and damaging a patrol vehicle during a traffic enforcement operation in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, has secured the conviction of a 26-year-old traffic offender, Atada Victor, for dangerous driving, assaulting an FRSC road marshal and other traffic-related offences.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Osondu Ohaeri.
According to Ohaeri, the conviction underscores the FRSC’s commitment to protecting its personnel and ensuring that attacks on law enforcement officers are met with appropriate legal sanctions.
He said the incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. during a routine traffic enforcement operation within the FCT.
Ohaeri explained that the offender, who was driving a vehicle with registration number RBC 398 DQ, was flagged down by an FRSC patrol team for an alleged traffic violation.
Instead of complying with the directive to stop, he allegedly accelerated, knocked down the arresting road marshal and rammed into the FRSC patrol vehicle in an attempt to evade arrest.
The corps said the attack left the road marshal with serious injuries to the head, eye and other parts of the body.
The injured officer was immediately evacuated to the National Hospital, Abuja, where he is receiving treatment and remains under medical observation.
The FRSC also disclosed that its patrol vehicle sustained extensive damage during the incident.
Reacting to the conviction, the Corps Marshal, Mr Shehu Mohammed, described the judgment as a strong warning that assaults on FRSC personnel and attempts to obstruct lawful enforcement operations would attract swift legal consequences.
Mohammed stressed that road traffic laws are designed to protect all road users and urged motorists to cooperate with FRSC personnel by obeying traffic regulations and complying with lawful directives during patrol and enforcement operations.
He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to enforcing road safety laws while protecting its officers in the discharge of their duties.
