INEC has assured residents of Enugu North Senatorial District of a free, fair, and credible by-election on June 20, saying all preparations have been concluded and political parties will enjoy a level playing field.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured residents of Enugu North Senatorial District that Saturday’s by-election will be conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner.
The assurance was given by the Head of Department, Voter Education, INEC Enugu, Mr. Chuka Achumie, during an interview with journalists in Enugu on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
The by-election is being organised to fill the vacant Enugu North Senatorial seat following the death of Senator Okey Ezea, who represented the district in the National Assembly.
The electoral exercise will take place across the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district, namely Igbo-Etiti, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu, and Uzo-Uwani.
INEC had earlier cleared seven candidates from various political parties to contest for the seat.
Speaking on the commission’s readiness, Achumie stated that all necessary preparations had been concluded and that the commission remained fully committed to delivering a transparent electoral process.
“If we are not prepared to conduct free and credible elections, we will not conduct them,” he said.
According to him, arrangements for the poll are progressing smoothly, with no major operational challenges confronting the commission ahead of the election.
He disclosed that the distribution of sensitive election materials was scheduled to commence on Thursday as part of the final preparations for the exercise.
Achumie also assured political parties and candidates participating in the contest that they would be given equal opportunities throughout the electoral process.
He stressed that INEC remained committed to maintaining neutrality and ensuring a level playing field for all contestants.
On voter mobilisation, the INEC official said the commission had intensified voter education and sensitisation campaigns across the district to encourage citizens to participate in the democratic process.
He urged eligible voters to come out peacefully on election day and exercise their civic responsibility without fear.
According to him, adequate measures have been put in place to guarantee a smooth voting process and safeguard the credibility of the election.
The Enugu North Senatorial District by-election is expected to attract significant political attention as parties compete to fill the vacant seat and strengthen their representation in the Senate.
INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting an election that reflects the will of the people and upholds public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
