Police in Katsina State have arrested a 20-year-old woman for allegedly causing the death of her 97-year-old grandmother following a domestic altercation in Daura Local Government Area.
A 20-year-old woman has been arrested by the Katsina State Police Command over the alleged killing of her 97-year-old grandmother following a domestic dispute in Daura Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect, identified as Aisha Hassan, was taken into custody after police launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred on June 12, 2026.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday in Katsina.
According to the police, the incident happened at about 7 p.m. following a disagreement between the suspect and her paternal grandmother, Hajiya Ummukhulsum Hassan.
Sadiq-Aliyu said the altercation allegedly escalated when the suspect struck the elderly woman on the head with a wooden chair.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Nigeria Police Force by the suspect’s father, Muktar Muhammad-Hassan.
Police operatives who responded to the report immediately visited the scene and found the victim unconscious and seriously injured.
The elderly woman was rushed to a hospital for emergency medical attention but was later pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
“The victim was rushed to a hospital but was later confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,” the police spokesperson stated.
Following preliminary investigations, the suspect was arrested and is currently being held in police custody.
According to the command, the suspect allegedly confessed during questioning, while investigators continue to gather evidence related to the case.
The police said the suspect would be arraigned before a competent court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Authorities have assured the public that due process will be followed and that further updates on the case will be communicated as investigations progress.
The incident has drawn attention due to the advanced age of the victim and the tragic circumstances surrounding the family dispute that allegedly led to her death.
