Fr. Ikpenwa Bows Out After 11 Years as Bigard Rector, Bishops Appoint Fr. Ezeoba Successor
A significant leadership transition has taken place at Bigard Memorial Seminary, BMS, Enugu following the appointment of Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Aloysius Ezeoba as the new Rector by the Bishops of the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, while Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Albert Ikpenwa bows out after an extensive tenure.
The appointment was made during the annual meeting of the bishops of the province alongside seminary formators, held at Bigard Seminary, where matters concerning priestly formation, governance, and institutional direction were also reviewed.
The transition was formally presented after evening prayers when Fr. Ikpenwa introduced Fr. Ezeoba to the seminary community as his successor in the presence of bishops, priests, and seminarians.
The chapel atmosphere immediately shifted into celebration as seminarians welcomed the incoming Bigard Rector with sustained applause and excitement. The seminary choir further elevated the moment with renditions of the Bigard Anthem and congratulatory hymns, marking a symbolic and emotional handover.
Fr. Ikpenwa’s tenure as Rector, spanning about 11 years, is widely regarded within the seminary community as a period marked by institutional consolidation, improved formation structures, and the initiation and completion of key developmental and administrative projects that strengthened both academic and spiritual life at the institution.
His leadership is credited with reinforcing stability and continuity in one of Nigeria’s most influential Catholic formation centres, shaping generations of seminarians through a structured and disciplined formation system.
The Bishops of the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, who retain authority over key seminary appointments, described the transition as part of ongoing efforts to sustain excellence in priestly formation and Catholic education across the province.
With the emergence of Fr. Ezeoba as the new Rector, attention now turns to a new phase of leadership expected to build on established foundations while responding to evolving pastoral and academic demands within the seminary system.
Prayers were offered for both priests during the ceremony, with members of the seminary community expressing hope for continuity, growth, and renewed vision under the new Bigard Rector.
