President Bola Tinubu has announced fresh appointments in Nigeria’s education sector, affecting NECO, NBTE, the National Library, and Federal Polytechnic N’yak-Shendam.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new round of appointments across major institutions in Nigeria’s education sector, including the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the Federal Polytechnic in N’yak-Shendam, Plateau State, and the National Library of Nigeria.
The appointments were announced for institutions under the Federal Ministry of Education as part of efforts to strengthen leadership and improve performance.
Tinubu appointed Prof. Modupe Adeola Adelabu as Chairman of the Governing Board of NECO, while retaining the current Registrar, Professor Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi.
He also named Engr. Dr. Bongfa Binfa as Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, Plateau State.
In addition, the President renewed the tenure of Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria.
For the National Board for Technical Education, Tinubu appointed Professor Babatunde Salako as Chairman of the board.
Earlier, on April 10, the President had also reappointed the incumbent Executive Secretary of NBTE, Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, for a second and final five-year term.
Prof. Adelabu is a retired professor of Educational Administration who rose to full professorship at Obafemi Awolowo University.
She previously served as Deputy Governor of Ekiti State between 2013 and 2014 and was Chairman of NBTE from 2018 to 2021.
Professor Salako, the new NBTE chairman, is a respected researcher and former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), where he served from 2016 to 2024.
During his tenure, NIMR reportedly witnessed stronger research governance, expanded global collaborations, improved infrastructure, and increased research output.
Dr. Bongfa Binfa succeeds Dr. Mukaila Zakari Ya’u, the pioneer Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, whose tenure ended on March 16, 2026.
The President approved Binfa’s appointment for a single five-year term following a public recruitment process initiated in September 2025.
Binfa holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and previously served as Deputy Rector (Academic) at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny.
He also worked as a lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Federal Polytechnic, Idah.
Tinubu also renewed Prof. Anunobi’s tenure at the National Library of Nigeria for a final five-year term.
She was first appointed on September 2, 2021, and has led reforms aimed at transforming the institution into a technology-driven national knowledge centre.
Her initiatives include the National Repository of Nigeria, the Newspaper and Magazine Locator, the Index and Abstract to Nigerian Newspapers, and the National Virtual Library of Nigeria.
She has also played a key role in advancing the completion of the National Library headquarters project and plans to transfer heritage collections from 34 state branches to the Abuja headquarters.
According to the presidency, the renewal of her tenure is expected to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms, completion of strategic projects, and implementation of the institution’s 2025–2030 development plan.
